SCCA Performance Rally events follow a basic rally format similar to that used around the globe. However, USA events do not allow for on-course practice (recces). Competitors generally see the course for the first time as they race it. Racing takes place only on "special stages," using demanding back roads closed by local authorities for the event. "Transits" connect the "special stage" sections together and are driven at normal highway speeds, with teams fully subject to all traffic laws. SCCA Performance Rally vehicles are production-based cars and trucks from manufacturers around the world. They compete both for the overall victory and wins within a class structure that groups together vehicles with similar performance. Each vehicle carries a driver and a co-driver/navigator. Using a detailed route book and a sophisticated rally computer, the co-driver keeps the team on-course and advises the driver of any hazards ahead. This role is as critical as the driver's skill, since the team is traveling at full racing speeds over roads they have never before seen, in any type of weather. Selected entries (driver/co-driver): * 1999 Overall Manufacturer, Driver & Co-Driver Champions Noel Lawler & Charles Bradley; Open Class Hyundai Elantra * Seven-time US champion Paul Choiniere and multi-time co-driver champion Jeff Becker; Open Class Hyundai Tiburon * 1999 Rim of the World winners Garen and Doc Shrader; Open Class Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV (FIA WRC-type supercar) * 1999 Production Class Driver Champion Karl Scheible with Russ Hughes; FIA Group N Mitsubishi Lancer Evo V (FIA WRC-type supercar) * 1999 Group 2 Driver Champion Bryan Hourt (co-driver TBA); Group 2 Honda Civic * 1999 Production GT Driver Champion Gail Truess with co-driver Pattie Hughes; PGT Mazda 323 GTX * 1998 Sno*Drift Production GT winners Chris Czyzio and Eric Carlson; PGT Mitsubishi Eclipse * Seamus Burke & Frank Cunningham -- FIA Group N 98 Subaru Impreza WRX Additional news interest: * Very strong Open Class field -- 2 factory Hyundais, 4 Mitsubishi Lancer Evos, plus the USA debut of a privately entered FIA group N US-Spec STi Subaru Impreza WRX * The entire Sno*Drift event is held in one day, and uses the Atlanta, MI headquarters for all services during the day, making press coverage very easy. * The 2000 season marks the return of globally recognized, FIA classed, performance rally vehicles to the USA. The FIA cars will run under full FIA technical regulations, and compete for a separate yearlong, FIA cars only championship. Combined with another performance rally being held this weekend in Canada, there are more than 100 rally cars in competition in North America - perhaps another wintertime record in itself. The list shown below reflects the latest revisions to the US-based rally's start order. The weather forecast is good, but cold, as is to be expected in this part of the country. Today's temps will hover right around freezing, but the skies are crystal clear and the air is calm - perfect for driving and spectating. Tomorrow is expected to be much the same, with some cloud cover. Key Changes: Gail Truess, the 1999 SCCA ProRally Champion in the Production GT class, has scratched at the last minute. Heavily favored for a strong finish with her proven and snow-proficient Mazda 323GTX; the car, which was crashed heavily in last year's final event, was not ready in time. A new, Colorado-based team, Mark Cox and Jim Hall, has been added to the list, and will be the 22nd car on the road. Interestingly, their car is a Mazda 323 GTX. The Eric Burmeister/Mike Buskirk entry has moved up the start order by four positions (from 29th to 26th), in correction of a computer error. Complete details are below in table format. Fighting an increasingly close battle with an FIA Group N entry driven by the current 1999 Production class Drivers' Champion, the Paul Choiniere/Jeff Becker Tiburon once again took on all comers, and emerged with a very satisfying victory. Crisp temperatures and cloudless skies, combined with extreme patience behind the wheel allowed the John Buffum-managed team from Colchester, Vermont, to master this demanding event. Key Notes: - Retirements started quickly at Sno*Drift, and didn't discriminate between the experienced and more junior entrants. The extreme cold, with early morning temps hovering just above zero degrees F (-15 C), was hard on equipment and participants, with two entries retiring before the completion of the first stage. The temperature never rose much above freezing during the day, and plummeted after darkness fell on the frigid northern portion of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. - 1999 Driver/Co-Driver champions Noel Lawler and Charles Bradley, in an Open-class Hyundai Elantra, had a meeting with a tree at the conclusion of Stage 2. Lawler, already suffering from a day-old stomach virus, and not a friend of snow rallying, was not in top form at the start, but pressed on as best he could until things came to this abrupt end. - Jon Kemp and Rod Hendricksen, SCCA ProRally favorites for years in their stalwart Audi 4000 quattro, found themselves in the overall leading position at the start of Stage 4, but that ended quickly with a near-head on collision with a tree at that stage's popular spectator area. - Seven-time Driver/Co-Driver champions Paul Choiniere and Jeff Becker were having their own set of challenges as well, with the return of a presumed-solved mysterious engine problem that had hampered them on occasion last year. With several of the Open-class entrants having problems of their own, team owner John Buffum wisely had the turbo boost dialed back on the Hyundai Tiburon, feeling confident of a good finish based on smooth driving and reliability. - Garen and Doc Shrader were having a brilliant run in their Lancer Evo IV, easily posting fastest time in Stage 4, and taking the overall lead briefly held by Kemp. While transiting back to mid-day service however, that blistering run cost them dearly as their rear differential disintegrated, leaving them with one-wheel drive. They retired shortly thereafter. - Also on the retirement list was Seamus Burke's FIA Group N Subaru Impreza, making its US performance-rally competition debut, with a rear half-shaft failure. This was a shakedown event for this brand new car, and Burke was expecting some minor problems as they sort out this state-of-the-art FIA car. A full-on assault for the new SCCA ProRally Group N season title is planned. Subaru was well represented, with a total of three Imprezas entered, the remaining two finishing well. - Karl Scheible, piloting the Vermont Sports Car-prepared FIA Group N Lancer Evo V had a great day, with nary a problem, enjoying a 30-second lead over Choiniere for much of the day. On the penultimate stage, however, that all changed with a slide into an iced-over snow bank that took a healthy bite out of the driver's side front bumper cover. While the damage was mostly cosmetic, that 30-second margin over the Hyundai evaporated instantly, putting Scheible three seconds behind, setting up a classic last-stage battle for all the marbles.
