STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO -- A decisive win at the muddy Colorado Cog rally this weekend makes it two in a row for Travis Pastrana and co-driver Christian Edstrom.
The victory makes them the first crew to stand atop the podium for a second time in 2006. Each of the previous six rounds of the Rally America championship have seen a different winner.
Despite pushing their Subaru Impreza hard over two days and more than 100-miles - of competitive racing, Matt Iorio and co-driver Ole Holter had to settle for second.
We worked really hard all weekend, said an obviously disappointed Iorio. But it was good to finish on the podium.
Pastrana and Edstrom set the pace early, taking the fastest times on more than half the stages.
The win gives Pastrana a commanding lead in the Rally America drivers championship, but Iorio said he doesnt plan to make it easy for his rival at the remaining two rounds of the season.
I have a feeling Travis likes to race; hell come out to the next two rounds and hell be racing, said Iorio. Well be there to challenge him right to the end.
Edstrom has predicted his crew will sweep the remaining rounds.
Canadian Andrew Comrie-Picard and co-driver Marc Goldfarb finished third overall in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IV. It was the teams first time at the Steamboat Springs-based rally, and Comrie-Picard said hell be back.
The speeds here are amazing. This type of rally is one of the reasons that I love rally, said Comrie-Picard. Cog is the epitome of the improbable things we do to cars.
Matthew Johnson and co-driver Kim DeMotte finished fourth overall and took the Production-GT win over the rival crew of Tanner Foust and Scott Crouch. Foust and Crouch crashed hard late in the race and didnt finish.
Pastranas Subaru teammates Ken Block and co-driver Alex Gelsomino also suffered hard luck. They had looked like early contenders for the podium, but a blown engine partway through Day 1 put them out of the race.
David Anton and co-driver Dominik Jozwiak won the Group N class.
Kenny Bartram and co-driver Dennis Hotson were the fastest two-wheel drive competitors. The pair finished eighth overall and took the Production class win in their Volkswagen Beetle.
The Group 5 win went to John Conley and co-driver Steven Treml in a Dodge Colt, while Eric Duncan and Matt Duncan won Group 2 in their Honda Civic.
There are now two rounds remaining in the Rally America National Championship. Competitors head to Michigans Upper Peninsula for round eight, the Lake Superior Performance Rally, October 2021.
